Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Markin is an attendance and identity-verification platform for educational institutions. It uses facial recognition and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology. Each institution maintains its own student database and attendance infrastructure. Student information is not intended to be pooled into a central shared biometric database.

2. Information We Collect

• Student information: Name, enrollment number, department, course, semester and class.
• Facial data: Original facial images and derived biometric embeddings.
• Attendance data: Attendance status, timestamps, class details and verification results.
• Bluetooth data: Classroom device identifiers, signal strength (RSSI) and temporary authentication tokens.
• Technical data: Device details, app logs, network information and security records.

Markin does not intentionally collect GPS coordinates or continuously track student locations through BLE attendance verification.

3. Purpose of Collection

Information is used for student identification, facial registration and verification, classroom proximity checks, attendance recording, prevention of unauthorized attendance submissions, and system administration and troubleshooting. Biometric data is not intended for advertising or unrelated commercial profiling.

4. Data Storage and Institutional Ownership

Student records, facial images, biometric embeddings and attendance data are stored on the institution's designated infrastructure, such as its managed server or VPS. The institution determines access permissions, retention requirements and administrative use of the data.

5. Data Access and Security

Access is restricted to authorized institutional administrators and personnel with approved responsibilities. Markin technical personnel do not have unrestricted access to institutional student data. Appropriate safeguards, including access restrictions, secure communication and protected backups, should be maintained.

6. Data Retention

• Original facial images: Retained until graduation.
• Facial embeddings: Retained until graduation.
• Attendance records: Retained according to institutional academic and administrative requirements.
• Technical and security logs: Retained according to applicable institutional policies.

Deletion should be carried out in accordance with applicable legal requirements and institutional procedures, including relevant backup deletion processes.

7. Student Rights

Subject to applicable law, students may request access to or correction or deletion of their personal information and may withdraw consent where consent is the applicable legal basis. Students who cannot complete facial verification may use an administrator-assisted attendance process. For requests concerning institution-held records, students should contact their institution's authorized administrator.

8. Data Sharing

Student data is not sold. It may be accessed by authorized institutional personnel and necessary contracted infrastructure or technical service providers, subject to appropriate controls. Information may also be disclosed where required by law.

9. Children's Privacy

The institution must comply with applicable requirements for children's personal data and obtain verifiable parental or guardian consent wherever legally required.

10. Policy Updates

This Privacy Policy may be updated periodically. Changes will be communicated through appropriate channels.
